Run Smart... Run Forever!

AGE: 58
CAREER: Large-Scale Real Estate Development & Consulting, 34 years
LIFE: Athletics, Photography, Guitar, Travel, Woodworking

ATHLETIC HISTORY: Champion springboard diver in high school. Recreational runner in college.  First marathon Austin '81.  Continued racing through mid 20's, including marathons, 5/10k's, and some triathlons, but void of serious training.  Back to recreational running early-mid 30's.  Renewed interest in competitive racing by late 30's, prompted by old college buddy's fervent interest in athletics as a lifestyle.  Serious and focused training for over a decade now, with most competitive performances to date........

LEADERSHIP: Marathon Training Group Leader, Chicago Area Runners Association, 5 years.

PR'S:
MARATHON: 2:49:47 [Chicago '06]
1/2 MARATHON: 1:21:33 [Kentucky Derby Festival '02]
5K: 18:00 [Run For The Zoo '04]
SPRINT TRIATHLON: 1:15:29 [Chicago '02, mountain bike, 1st place]
1/2 IRONMAN TRIATHLON: 5:05:45 [Steelhead, MI '06... on mountain bike!]

GOALS/MOTIVATIONS: Long-term health and fitness, physical and mental challenge, competitive excitement, illusion of youth.

FAVORED EVENT: Marathon, by far... most physically and emotionally challenging.

MARATHONS: Austin [x4], Chicago [x7], Eugene, Louisville, Rome [x2], New York, Steamboat Springs [x3], Anchorage, Venice, Rotterdam, Athens, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Barcelona, Boston, Dallas, Ft. Worth, Houston, San Antonio...

TRAINING PHILOSOPHY: Balance... quality running miles with cross and strength training, allowing for adequate recovery between tough sessions. Running days limited to 4 per week, varying intensity and distance, ~55 miles/week typically.  Alternate days spent swimming, biking, elliptical training, etc. as lower-impact, cardiovascular, running recovery.  Incorporate moderate strength training 2-3 days per week. Use a heart rate monitor to maximize effectiveness on hard runs and to limit pace on long runs.  Try to "listen" to body, constantly evaluating sensory feedback against experience to tailor sessions on the fly.  Other training focus includes: balanced recovery nutrition, rest, stretching, mental preparations and racing. Not fanatical or obsessive about training... have a demanding career, active personal life, and respect for the occasional day as a couch potato... physical and emotional balance, without getting stale.

INJURIES: Have had just about all of the classic runner injuries... recovered from every one with good medical guidance and patience. Have run injury free over the last 3+ years, arguably the most active and high performance years of my life from a training and racing perspective.

As we discover from one other on our runs, we're more than runners.  Although the one common interest we all share is our propensity for putting one foot in front of the other more times than anyone cares to count, things are happening in our lives that guide/restrict our movements in many degrees... and we each have stories to tell about how we got to this point and what motivates us.  Email me with a brief bio of sorts which describes you:
    - personally [outside of running],
    - athletic history [informal, competitive, reasons for changes... whatever],
    - goals and motivations [this is important... think hard about the "real" roots],
    - races run [any distance, any sport],
    - injuries [sustained to date, any problems currently, worries, etc.], and
    - anything else on your mind.
There's no specific format you have to follow, or limit on the number of words, but try to make it comprehensive.  I've included mine as an example below.
